Lismore: Lios Mor to Tuckurimba

Maurice Ryan and Robert Smith present a new history of Lismore, NSW. Based upon new sources and analysis, it is designed to be accessible to anyone from a Primary school student preparing a project, to the writer of a specialised or scholarly history.

The book details how the area was seen by its early settlers, and considers the naming of Lismore (from Lios Mor in Scotland) as an important sign of continuing local identity. Lios Mor means 'great garden', a rich but enclosed place, and this image can be traced through the history of this area to the present. It shows how the Lismore area was distinctive, and in ways that readily included newcomers. It is a rich story of shared feeling, one of which the rest of the country might well be envious.
